Does my child need any experience?

Accepted Answer

Children need to be able to use scissors and cut fabric on their own. Cutting is part of every session from the first week, so it isn't something we can work around. If your child isn't there yet, let us know before booking and we'll be honest with you about timing.No fashion design experience is needed. Every child starts in the same place — with a brief and a decision to make. We teach the process, not a template, so a complete beginner and a child who draws constantly both have room to move.

What ages are the fashion design classes for?

The Mini Fashion Design for the Future Club runs for ages 8–12.  Birthday experiences are designed for ages 8–12. Future Fashion Founders, our advanced program, runs for ages 12–15 and includes garment construction on sewing machines.

Does my child need to know how to sew?

Accepted Answer

Not for Level 1. The club is deliberately no-sew, which removes the technical barrier so children can focus on the actual design thinking — materials, proportion, construction logic, and presenting an idea. Level 2 introduces hand-stitching on a 1/3-scale mannequin. Sewing machines are introduced in Future Fashion Founders for ages 12–15.

What's the difference between Level 1 and Level 2?

Design Level 1 covers the full design process: research, materials, sketching, draping, and presenting a mini collection. Draping Level 2 goes deeper into draping and hand-stitching on 1/3-scale foam mannequins, working with grainline, fullness, and seam placement — the same principles used in a professional design studio.

Can we try one session before committing to a term?

Yes. We run trial sessions and one-day workshops so we can see if  our fashion design classes for kids is a good fit. Message us for the next available date.

What happens after the first term?

Most students repeat the program, and that's how it's meant to work. One term teaches a child the process. Repeating it is how they get good at it — the same way nobody expects to be fluent after twelve piano lessons.This mirrors the industry. Working designers move through the full cycle — research, materials, draping, construction, presentation — two to four times a year, every year. The process doesn't change; what changes is the speed, the quality of the decisions, and what comes out the other end.Each term runs a new brief and produces a new collection, so repeating students aren't redoing work. They're doing what designers actually do: running the same process again, better.

How many children are in each class?

Maximum 12. Design isn't a subject you can teach from the front of the room — every child is working on a different idea, hitting a different problem, at a different point in the process. A small group means real teaching time with each student, and feedback on the specific decision in front of them rather than a general instruction to the room.

Are classes screen-free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. No tablets, no design apps, no screens.This is deliberate. Design ideas arrive when hands are busy and attention is uninterrupted, and real fabric teaches what a screen can't — how a material falls, what happens when you cut it wrong, the difference between an idea and an idea that works.It also asks children to stay with a problem past the point it stops being easy. That's a learned capacity, and it needs somewhere to develop. Students work with fabric, paper, and their hands, with classical music playing during studio time.

Do boys join the club?

Yes. Fashion design is a technical, problem-solving discipline and the club is open to all children in the age range.

Question 10

What if my child misses a class?

Accepted Answer

If your child misses a session, they're welcome to join another session of the same course that week, subject to space. Make-up sessions can't be carried beyond the term.Missed sessions aren't refundable or deductible — your child's place in the group and their materials are reserved for the full term.

Question 11

What should my child wear and bring?

Accepted Answer

Just comfortable clothes. All materials, tools, fabrics, and mannequins are provided.If you have leftover fabric at home, or lightweight dresses no longer being worn, send them in — we'll put them to use in class. Much of what we work with is donated or upcycled, and there's something different about designing with a fabric that already has a history.

Question 12

My daughter is shy. Is this right for her?

It often suits quieter children particularly well. Sessions are small, the work is hands-on rather than performance-based, and every child makes their own decisions about materials, shape, and finish. Presenting a collection at the end of term is easier when a child is talking about something they genuinely designed and can defend and the teacher ensures that the mini designer  will be comfortable.

Is this an art class or a design class?

A design class. Art asks what looks good; design asks what works, for whom, made from what, at what cost. Students follow the industry sequence — research, materials, draping, construction, presentation — which is why the work holds up.
